The change was announced in August last year, but is now being seen by all users

Instagram has decided to change its iconic grid layout to feature vertical instead of square posts and the change is finally being rolled out to all users.

The square posts have been a part of Instagram since the platform was originally launched in 2010. The platform has decided to stick to the format even as others went vertical. The vertical format has appeared for years on Instagram for its reels, but will now feature on the main page as well.

The change was announced by Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, in a story in August last year. However, he added that Instagram was currently ‘testing’ the feature.

“The vast majority of what is uploaded to Instagram today is vertical. It’s either 4 by 3 in a photo or 9 by 16 in a video, and cropping it down to square is pretty brutal. So, I’m hoping we can figure out a way to manage this transition,” Mosseri said.

The social media platform had said at the time that it would listen to community feedback before it makes the change permanent. However, the change has now started appearing across users’ feed meaning it is likely here to stay.

Many users of Instagram have carefully curated their feed to show a larger image across the grid. These users will likely lose the fruit of that effort.

Mosseri had called the square format a relic of the past and said that Instagram was making the change to stay up to date with the demands of content being produced on the internet in modern times.
