Pakistan, China, Russia, and Iran took part in a Quadrilateral meeting held in Moscow on Tuesday to support regional efforts for a stable and peaceful future in Afghanistan.

During the meeting, all four countries expressed deep concern over the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan and reaffirmed their commitment to a sovereign, peaceful, and terrorism-free Afghanistan. They also agreed to enhance cooperation and coordinated action against terrorism across the region.

Pakistan’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Mohammad Sadiq Khan, shared details of the meeting in a post on social media platform X. He also held separate meetings with his Chinese and Iranian counterparts, where they discussed regional security, counterterrorism, and humanitarian issues in detail.

This development comes ahead of the seventh Moscow Format Consultative Meeting on Afghanistan, which was also held on Tuesday. The platform includes ten countries — Russia, China, Pakistan, Iran, India, and the Central Asian states.

A key highlight of the session is that Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi is officially representing Afghanistan as a member for the first time. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the discussions will focus on national reconciliation, economic cooperation, counterterrorism, and anti-narcotics efforts. Muttaqi is also expected to hold a separate meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

It is important to note that Russia became the first country in July to formally recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan.
