On Wednesday, a bomb blast targeted the Quetta-bound Jaffer Express in the Spezend area of the Mastung district of Balochistan while the train was on its way from Peshawar. The horrific incident injured at least 12 people, including women and children.
According to railway officials, the intensity of the blast derailed six train carriages and one overturned, injuring the passengers inside. This was the second explosion in the same area in the last 10 hours. Earlier that morning, another blast occurred near the main track as the Peshawar-bound Jaffer Express was preparing to depart from the Quetta railway station. However, the track was not damaged and the train was allowed to continue its journey after a security clearance.
Police officials said the blast was carried out using a remote-controlled device planted on the track. Following the explosion, security forces and police immediately reached the scene and shifted the injured to a nearby medical center.
A senior Pakistan Railways official told Dawn News that six coaches of the Jaffer Express derailed after the blast and one of them overturned, injuring five passengers. Railway officials added that 270 passengers were on board the train at the time of the blast. The track will be repaired on Wednesday after security clearance, during which train service will remain suspended.
