Ghizer flooded after glacial outburst, several villages cut off

A glacial lake outburst in the Gupis area of Ghizer district, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), has caused significant flooding and destruction, creating a large artificial lake and cutting off access to several villages. While officials confirmed widespread damage on Friday, August 22, 2025, they reported no loss of life so far.

The glacier burst, which occurred at Tali Das, triggered landslides that completely blocked the Gilgit-Shandur Road, isolating Raushan village. The Ghizer River has been blocked since 3 a.m., causing further flooding and threatening additional communities with submersion. However, timely warnings issued to residents prevented casualties.

Over 50 people have been rescued so far, according to the GB government spokesperson, Faizullah Firaq. He stated that the blocked river flow has created a substantial artificial lake, posing a serious risk to nearby settlements. The GB Chief Minister is personally overseeing the response efforts, and a helicopter from Force Command Northern Areas has been deployed for rescue operations. Further helicopter support has been requested to assist with stranded individuals.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms across parts of Gilgit-Baltistan from August 23-27, with a heightened risk of landslides and mudslides. Authorities and residents have been urged to remain vigilant. The PMD specifically highlighted Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, and Shigar as areas at high risk of heavy rainfall.

The incident underscores the ongoing vulnerability of GB to glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), highlighting the need for continued disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies in the region.
