National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a travel advisory warning of potential road closures due to heavy rainfall and subsequent flash floods and landslides.

The advisory, issued August 19, 2025, urges tourists to avoid travel to Gilgit-Baltistan, Malakand Division, and Kohistan areas.

The NDMA anticipates two more monsoon rain spells, exacerbating the already perilous conditions. Numerous roads are currently blocked or at high risk of closure, including key routes in the mountainous regions.

Specific locations mentioned include Surmo Bridge in Ghanche, Saltoro River Bridge in Shayok, and various sections of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) and other major arteries.

Many of these closures lack alternative routes, leaving travelers stranded.Addressing a press conference, NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider stated that Pakistan is experiencing its seventh monsoon spell, with two more expected before September 10th.

He highlighted the increased risk of glacial melting impacting Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, while cloudbursts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa further complicate the situation. The chairman reported approximately 670 deaths and 80-90 missing persons to date, with the final damage assessment pending after the conclusion of the monsoon season.

The government, with the support of the Pakistan Army, is actively engaged in rescue and relief efforts, establishing over 400 relief camps and providing aid to affected areas. Federal Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik emphasized the disproportionate impact of climate change on Pakistan, despite its minimal contribution to global carbon emissions.

He stressed the government’s commitment to infrastructure restoration and victim compensation. Information Minister Ataullah Tarar confirmed ongoing coordination between the federal and provincial governments in managing the crisis.
