At least 91 dead in Buner after rains wreak havoc

At least 91 people have died in Buner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, after a cloudburst caused severe flooding in at least three sub-divisions of the district.

According to authorities, sub-divisions Daggar, Chagharzi, Pir Baba and Gagra divisons. A flood emergency has been declared in the district.

At least 91 bodies have been brought to hospitals across the district, according to the office of the Deputy Commissioner. However, the office provided no count for the injured, saying they were in ‘hundreds’. Police, Rescue 1122 and civil defense are all engaged in rescue efforts.

Meanwhile, rains have also wreaked havoc in other areas of the province with the total death toll reaching 190. 21 people were killed in Bajaur, 23 in Shangla, 15 in Battagaram, 14 in Mansehra, 11 in Swat while another 5 were killed in Lower Dir.

These incidents are part of a larger pattern of monsoon-related devastation across Pakistan since late June. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports at least 325 deaths (including 142 children) and 743 injuries nationwide since June 26th due to flash floods and torrential rains. The northern regions and KP have been particularly hard hit. Further details regarding the ongoing rescue efforts and the overall impact of the severe weather are expected.
