At least 189 people have died and seven others injured in rain-related incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) Bajaur and Lower Dir districts. The incidents, which occurred on Friday, August 15, involved flash floods and building collapses due to heavy rainfall.
Buner was particularly affected with 91 deaths being reports, according to the office of the deputy commissioner.
In Bajaur’s Salarzai tehsil, a cloudburst triggered flash floods in Jabrarai village. Rescue 1122 teams, working alongside local residents, recovered 18 bodies and rescued three injured individuals from the debris and floodwaters. Seven people remain missing and a search and rescue operation is underway. The injured received immediate medical attention before being transported to a hospital.
Separately, in Lower Dir’s Maidan area, the roof of a house in Suri Pao village collapsed due to heavy rain, resulting in five fatalities and four injuries. Rescue teams faced significant challenges reaching the scene due to heavy rain, flooded roads, and difficult terrain, requiring a three-hour trek.
These incidents are part of a larger pattern of monsoon-related devastation across Pakistan since late June. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports at least 325 deaths (including 142 children) and 743 injuries nationwide since June 26th due to flash floods and torrential rains. The northern regions and KP have been particularly hard hit. Further details regarding the ongoing rescue efforts and the overall impact of the severe weather are expected.
