FO rejects Zelensky’s claim of Pakistanis fighting for Russia

The Pakistani Foreign Office has issued a formal statement categorically rejecting claims by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Pakistani nationals are fighting as mercenaries for Russia in the ongoing conflict.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the allegations are “baseless and unfounded,” emphasizing that Pakistan has not been formally contacted by Ukrainian authorities and that no verifiable evidence has been presented to substantiate the claims.

President Zelensky, in a statement on August 4, alleged that Ukrainian forces were encountering mercenaries from several countries, including Pakistan, China, and parts of Africa, in the northeastern Kharkiv region. His statement followed a visit to the frontline.

The Pakistani government’s formal rejection underscores its previously stated neutral stance on the Ukraine conflict. Pakistan has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy, in line with the principles of the UN Charter. The Foreign Office press release indicates that Pakistan intends to raise the matter with Ukrainian authorities to seek clarification regarding the unsubstantiated allegations.

This formal denial follows previous denials of allegations concerning the provision of arms to Ukraine. These earlier claims, including a BBC investigation suggesting a significant arms deal, were also refuted by Pakistani officials and the Russian ambassador to Pakistan.
