Heavy monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc across Pakistan, pushing the death toll to 234 since late June, with nearly half of the victims being children.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported 11 additional fatalities on Tuesday, six of which occurred in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), where flash floods swept away children and collapsed roofs.
Further deaths were reported in Bajaur, Buner, Upper Kohistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), where flash floods devastated communities, damaging homes, crops, and infrastructure.
The NDMA details a grim picture: 79 men, 42 women, and 113 children have perished. Punjab has suffered the most significant loss of life (135), followed by KP (56), Sindh (24), and Balochistan (16). Azad Jammu and Kashmir reported two deaths, and one child died in Islamabad.
Rescue efforts are underway, with 250 tourists rescued from Babusar and Deosai areas, though 10-15 individuals remain missing. The Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has directed the NDMA to coordinate relief efforts with provincial governments.
A fresh advisory has been issued for glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), flooding, and landslides in Punjab, GB, and KP. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts continued rainfall, increasing the risk of these hazards.
The NDMA has distributed relief supplies including tents, blankets, food, and emergency equipment. Despite these efforts, the ongoing devastation highlights the urgent need for continued support and preparedness to mitigate the impact of the monsoon season.
