Maulana Asjad Mahmood, son of Jamiat-e-Ulema Pakistan chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, was held at gunpoint by armed individuals on National Highway N55 near the limits of Yark Police Station a few days ago according to the party.
The incident occurred at around 4pm while Mahmood was traveling to Lakki Marwat to attend a funeral.
According to accounts, approximately 30-40 armed individuals, some carrying rocket launchers, stopped Mahmood’s three-vehicle convoy. They claimed to be acting on orders from their leader and demanded that the entire convoy accompany them.
Mahmood’s security detail resisted, drawing their own weapons, leading to a tense standoff lasting 15-20 minutes. The The armed group eventually allowed the convoy to proceed after contacting their leader and receiving permission.
The incident has raised serious concerns about security failures in the region. Senator Maulana Atta-ur-Rehman brought the matter to the Senate floor on Tuesday.
In a statement, the JUI said that it was being punished for fighting for peace and supporting the state against terrorism. The statement added that the incident raised serious questions over the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and government writ seems to have particularly diminished in the southern districts of the province.
Politicians belonging to the JUI have faced several attacks in 2025 in all four provinces of Pakistan, with several incidents resulting in deaths of local leaders as well.
