A top United States general told the parliament on Tuesday that Pakistan has been a ‘phenomenal’ partner in fighting terrorism, particularly against the Islamic State Khorasan Province.

CENTCOM Chief General Kurilla appeared in the US House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday where he detailed the US army’s posture in conflicts around the globe.

Answering a question about ISKP, he said that the organisation and Taliban hate each other and a large number of its fighters have melted away into the tribal areas at the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

However, he added that ISKP was one of the most active terror organisations and was plotting attacks globally including against the US.

“Through a phenomenal partnership with Pakistan, they have gone after ISIS Khorasan, killing dozens of its fighters,” Kurilla added. He added that Pakistan has captured at least five high-value ISKP targets based on US intelligence. Kurilla also mentioned the extradition of Sharifullah by Pakistan, who had been involved in the Abbey Gate bombing.

The general added that Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir had called him to apprise him of Sharifullah’s arrest and that Pakistan’s actions were having a visible effect on ISKP.

He went on to say that the US needs a relationship with both Pakistan and India. “I do not believe it as a binary switch,” he added.
