A polio vaccination team was attacked by unknown assailants in Balochistan on Tuesday, leading to the death of one security official.
The polio team was attacked in Kuli Muhammad Hassni, in Balochistan’s Noshki district.
A policeman who was part of the security detail for the polio team was injured by the firing and later succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as Waheed Ahmad, a resident of Jamalabad.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the targeting of the polio team. In a statement issued from PMO, Shehbaz offered condolences to the family of the policeman killed in the attack. He also added that the government will take tough measures to deal with the elements trying to derail the campaign.
A massive country-wide polio vaccination campaign was launched on Monday, aiming to vaccinate 45 million children under the age of five. The campaign will continue for one week.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries where polio remains endemic. Factors that have hampered vaccination efforts have included security threats to polio teams, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
