Security forces killed all 16 terrorists who attacked the Bannu Cantt on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations.
ISPR added that 4 of the terrorists who were eliminated were suicide bombers. However, five soldiers were martyred while fighting the terrorists.
“The assailants sought to breach the cantonment’s security; however, their nefarious designs were swiftly and decisively foiled by the vigilant and resolute response of Pakistan’s security forces,” ISPR said. The statement added that the attackers rammed explosive-laden vahicles into the cantt’s wall ‘desperation’.
The statement said that security forces had responded to the attack with ‘unwavering courage and professional excellence’.
Due to the explosions, the perimeter wall of the Bannu Cantt as well as adjoining structures were severely affected. Damage to a mosque and a residential building led to 13 civilian deaths and injuries to 32 others.
However, the ISPR added that the resolve of the security forces to fight terrorism remains steadfast. “The sacrifices of our brave soldiers and innocent civilians further reinforce our unwavering commitment to safeguarding our nation at all costs,” the statement added.
ISPR also said that there was evidence of Afghan terrorists being involved in the attack.
“Intelligence reports have unequivocally confirmed the physical involvement of Afghan nationals in this heinous act, with evidence also pointing to the fact that the attack was orchestrated and directed by Khwarij ring leaders operating from Afghanistan,” ISPR said.
The statement said that the Afghan Interim Government should prevent use of its territory, otherwise Pakistan ‘reserves the right to take action’.
